A transparent padlock is a working pin tumbler lock in a clear acrylic body. You see the key pins, driver pins and springs, and you watch each pin set on the shear line as you pick. It is the single most useful object for a beginner — and the first lock in every one of our kits.

Transparent Padlocks
It is a standard pin tumbler padlock — plug, pins, springs, shackle — built from clear acrylic instead of brass. Insert the key and the pins line up on the shear line; remove it and the springs push the driver pins back across the line, blocking the plug. Because you can see all of this, the abstract idea of "setting a pin" becomes obvious in about thirty seconds.

Acrylic locks have loose tolerances, so they are easier than any real lock. That is the point: you learn the mechanics without frustration. After a week, move to a cutaway lock (real tolerances, still visible) then a progressive lock. The belt ranking lays out the full path.
